From a Toy Breaker to a Serial Innovator

Unlike other serial innovators, Avigyan’s journey towards innovation started in a different way. Since he was 4, he kept his father and mother very busy in two different ways. Every week his father had to buy 7 to 10 different new toys for him. Similarly, his mother had to dispose the damaged toys to waste- plastic buying hawkers. The reason for this was quite simple. From an early age, Avigyan tried to understand the mechanism behind the mechanical actions of toys because of which a toy never lasted more than 24 hours. He replaced parts of a toy by breaking other toys to try new actions. Sometimes he succeeded, sometimes he failed. But he never gave up. In his own words, he described his passion as, “I love to face challenges and try to find order out of disorder”.

Around the same time, he grew very empathetic towards societal problems. He got anxious about the deteriorating air quality in recent times. He developed an innovative device called “Safety and Alert for Excessive Pollutant” to curb down automobile pollution. According to him, this innovative device can earn four cores of revenue per annum with a meagre profit of Rs. 200.00 per unit.

He was awarded the first prize in the recently concluded “Nav Bharat Nirman” competition in India International Science Festival, 2019, held at Kolkata during first week of November 2019. For the same project, he was awarded first in the West Bengal State Youth and Science Fair, 2019 (District and Municipality level). The Department of Science and Technology, Government of West Bengal even expressed their desire to support his innovation for patenting, incubation or setting up a start-up – whichever proved to the best alternative. This innovation is also under consideration for the 12th National Biennial Competition, organized by the NIF-India, an organisation working under the DST, Government of India.

Before the introduction of the Atal Tinkering Laboratory in his school, Avigyan kept his parents so busy that sometimes they punished him out of frustration. But now, both of them have support him in all respects starting from purchasing Arduino Uno to attending various Innovation Festivals all over India, whenever required. But the establishment of an ATL in his school opened an entire world of opportunities to him. His School's Principal Shri Tapan Kumar Goswami and ATL-in-Charge Shri Alok Kumar Bhowmik always help him and support him in understanding concept of robotics, AI, various electrical instruments etc. Avigyan told, “All attending teachers, especially the Principal Sir treated me with a fatherly attitude. Their affections and supports helped him a lot to understand what innovation is.”

His another innovation titled “Safety and Alert for Vulnerable Emergency” which will act judiciously when a train driver suddenly succumbs to heart attack or falls deep asleep, was awarded first in at least six open state wide innovation challenges/competitions organized by various Under-Graduated and Post-Graduate Degree Technology Institutes/Colleges like Hooghly Engineering and Technology College, Hooghly, JIS College of Engineering, Nadia, GNIT, Kolkata, SKFGI, Hooghly, Saroj Mohan Institute of Technology (SMIT), Guptipara, Hooghly and Technique Polytechnic Institute, Hooghly. At the time of his demonstration of his innovation at the SMIT, Hooghly, he got the attention of Prof. S Roychaudhuri, Advisor of Maulana Abul Kalam University of Technology, a University of more two hundred B Tech and M Tech Colleges/Institutes. Prof. Roychaudhuri took his innovation in serious note and invited him to demonstrate his innovation at the University Campus during 4th Regional West Bengal Science and Technology Congress, 2019 in front large number of scientists, technocrats and high level dignitaries like Prof Bratya Basu, Hon’ble Minister in Charge, Department of Science and Technology and Dr. Partha Chaterjee, Hon’ble Minister in Charge, School and Higher Education Department for further consequential development of his Innovations. This innovation has also been accepted for the 11th National Biennial Competition, organized by the NIF-India, an organisation working under the DST, Government of India.

In spite of his serial innovations, Avigyan is not at all a bookworm. He spends much more time in sports and other co-curricular activities as compared to formal study. He loves to play football. He was awarded best goalkeeper in terms of lesser number of goals conceded in the Hooghly District Baby League, 2018-19, jointly organized by the HDSA and Indian Football Association. His team “Hooghly Dynamos” emerged runners in that competition. In his leisure time he loves to read books of “Detectives” and play quizzes. Recently, he along with his schoolmate Avrakishore emerged runners in a quiz competition for the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, organized by the School Education Department, Government of West Bengal.

Avigyan Kishor Das, a student of Class – VII of Hooghly Collegiate School expressed his desire to concentrate and focus more in innovations which will be empathetic to the cause of common and poor people of our country.
